Featuring a short back focus and an effective arrangement of three aspherical lens elements, the new Canon EF-M 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens delivers high image quality across the entire zoom range while achieving a compact body design. Furthermore, optimal lens placement and coating contribute to minimizing the occurrence of flare and ghosting. The lens’s AF actuator drive system and the EOS M digital camera’s AF algorithm are optimally matched to make possible rapid AF performance. By employing a lightweight focus ring ideal for video capture and a newly designed focus structure powered by a stepping motor (STM), the lens makes possible quiet, smooth AF performance not only when shooting still images, but also when capturing video.
During still-image shooting, the new Canon EF-M 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM realizes image-stabilization performance equivalent to approximately four shutter speed stops*while the lens’s Dynamic IS effectively corrects for a wide range of camera shake when recording video, such as when shooting while walking. With a closest focusing distance of 0.25 m and a maximum image magnification of 0.25x at the telephoto end, the lens enables users to get even closer to their subjects. When the camera’s focus mode is set to AF + MF, the full-time manual focus function allows users to make quick manual adjustments to focus after AF is complete by simply turning the focusing ring.
