Whatever you shoot, however you shoot it, the Canon EOS R5 will let you be creative in ways you simply couldn’t before. Capture sensational 45 megapixel photos at up to 20 frames per second*, or cinematic 12 bit 8K RAW video using the entire width of the camera’s sensor. Advanced AF is programmed using deep-learning artificial intelligence, while in-body image stabilisation works in concert with a lens’s own IS to provide up to 8 stops* of protection against camera shake.
Stay sharp, stay focused
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is lightning-fast to focus and boasts 5940 AF selectable positions, covering virtually 100% of the frame. Fast-moving subjects are kept sharp.
Ground-breaking intelligent AF
The camera’s autofocus is programmed using a deep-learning AI – first developed for our ground-breaking EOS-1D X Mark III. This enables the Canon EOS R5 to recognise and track a subject’s face and eyes with new levels of accuracy and precision, even when viewed from the side. This tracking ability is also available when photographing dogs, cats and birds, keeping them in sharp focus as they move – a first for EOS cameras.
Advanced autofocus technology
The Canon EOS R5 focuses with exceptional speed, accuracy and precision – able to recognise and track subjects as they move around the scene. Capture images with biting sharpness and clarity that are packed full of detail.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 5940 areas and total coverage
Wherever your subject is positioned the EOS R5 can find it and focus on it fast, using 5940 AF areas that cover virtually 100 per cent of the frame. These focus areas can be used together, individually, or in zones that can be moved around the frame according to where the action is.
AF points can be selected with a dedicated multi controller on the back of the camera or by using the touchscreen – tapping it when in live view mode or using it as a touch pad when the camera is at your eye.
Deep learning AI and subject recognition
The EOS ITR AF X autofocus system in the EOS R5 has been programmed using a deep-learning AI, originally developed for our ground-breaking EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera. In Face/Eye detection mode, the system recognises faces accurately, including those in profile when only one eye is visible. This ensures subjects are kept razor sharp, even when moving unpredictably and depth of field is shallow. And if a person turns away for a moment, their head continues to be tracked so that their face is sharp when they turn back towards the camera.
Furthermore, the EOS R5’s deep-learning AI has been programmed with the ability to recognise and track cats, dogs and birds – focusing on either their bodies, faces or eyes. This makes photographing wildlife easier than ever before, especially subjects such as birds in flight.
The EOS R5 can focus in as little as 0.05 sec – a class-leading performance for a full-frame mirrorless camera. Autofocus is also functional in light levels as low as -6EV, which is roughly the same illumination as is provided by a half-moon.
This incredible sensitivity to light also lets the EOS R5 focus with maximum apertures as small as f/22, allowing teleconverters to be used with relatively slow-aperture lenses, and very-compact super telephoto lenses, such as the RF 600mm F11 IS STM and RF 800mm F11 IS STM.
The behaviour of the camera’s AI Servo tracking autofocus can be adjusted by tweaking parameters such as ‘Tracking sensitivity ‘or ‘acceleration/ deceleration tracking’, or by selecting one of four ‘cases’ – configurations that are ideal for different types of photography.
The EOS R5 now includes Case A, which automatically selects one of the four subject-specific AF cases, according to what is being photographed.
When focusing manually, three focus assist methods can be used to ensure the point of critical focus is exactly where you want it to be.
• Focus Magnification
By enlarging the image, first by 6x and then by 15x, you’ll be able to better see the image and evaluate focus.
• Focus Peaking
The edges of the in-focus parts of the scene are outlined in a colour of your choosing.
• Dual Pixel Focus Guide
First seen in our Cinema EOS C300 Mark II camera, Dual Pixel Focus Guide uses the camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology to accurately measure camera-subject distance and compare this to the current manual focus setting. A graphical guide indicates if the point of focus is in front of, or behind, the camera’s measured value, and turns green when the two values coincide, indicating accurate focus.
The system makes manual focus pulling easier and more precise and gives filmmakers the kind of critical accuracy they need to work with 4K and 8K resolutions.
These three tools can be used with compatible RF lenses, EF lenses or manual focus cine lenses.
Ultimate speed, ultimate quality. Game-changing performance that will take your creativity to new heights.
No other camera comes close to the Canon EOS R5. Capture 45 megapixel, full-frame images at a staggering 20fps in complete silence and with full autofocus tracking. And, for situations that need it, a mechanical shutter is also available, allowing class-leading shooting speeds up to 12fps.
The Canon EOS R5 can capture stunning 8K DCI RAW video internally to a CFexpress card, using the whole width of its full-frame sensor for a truly cinematic look. Focus tracking is also available, for footage that looks so good you’d think it was shot on a Hollywood budget.
As well as delivering life-like image quality, 8K resolution allows editors to crop-in on footage and still output a 4K final cut.
There are plenty of options for shooting in 8K on the EOS R5:
• 12-bit RAW,
• 10-bit 4:2:2 MP4/H.265
• 8-bit 4:2:0 MP4/H.265,
With a choice of DCI or UHD aspect ratios, ALL-I or IPB compression methods and Canon Log or HDR PQ options. Frame rates of 23.98p, 24p, 25p or 29.97p are available, helping you achieve the look and feel you want. 8K can even be recorded to high speed SD (v90) cards when using IPB compression.
8K RAW provides the highest level of image quality and flexibility: capture four times as much resolution as 4K, and change parameters such as white balance after footage has been shot, using Canon Cinema RAW Development software or your favourite non-linear editing application.*
You can also extract still frames from 8K footage, as individual 35-megapixel JPEG files (or HEIF files if footage is recorded with HDR PQ), ideal for situations where you might need to supply video footage and still photos of the same event.
*Compatibility and availability varies for each software manufacturer
4K performance like never before, up to 120 fps
Alongside its ground-breaking 8K capabilities, the Canon EOS R5 sets new standards for videographers shooting in 4K. Capture 4K DCI (full frame) and 4K UHD at frame rates up to 120p (119.88fps) with 4:2:2/10-bit quality, enabling silky smooth slow-motion with stunning high resolution. At frame rates up to 59.94fps, there is a choice between using the full width of the camera’s sensor or a 1.6x crop, which is similar in size to Super 35mm.
For those needing the very highest 4K quality, the EOS R5’s 4K HQ mode reproduces stunning detail at frame rates up to 30p by oversampling 8K footage. The results need to be seen to be believed.
The myriad options for resolution, frame rate etc offered by the EOS R5 can be accessed from a redesigned movie mode menu, which makes it easy to find the combination of settings you’re looking for.
Our updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system allows smooth, accurate continuous focusing in all recording modes and features Face and Eye detection, making it ideal for documentaries and ‘run-and-gun’ style filming. It can also recognise cats, dogs and birds and track them around the frame. Pull-focus effects, that shift your audience’s attention from one place to another, are easy to create – simply tap the camera’s touch screen and the Canon EOS R5 will smoothly refocus at a speed specified by you.
When you’re focusing manually, the Canon EOS R5 offers a number of tools to help you nail critical sharpness accurately. Focus peaking highlights the edges of in-focus objects with a colour of your choosing, while Dual Pixel Focus Guide uses a graphical indicator to display whether the subject is front/back focused and turns green when correct focus is achieved.
The same Intelligent Image Stabilisation system that protects still photos from camera shake also operates when the Canon EOS R5 is capturing video, smoothing out unintentional camera movements. When combined with the electronic Movie Digital IS system,* which adds another level of performance, the results are superb, with footage that looks like it was shot using a gimbal or dolly.
*Movie Digital IS system is not available when shooting in 8K RAW
Just as 8K resolution reveals intricate detail and clarity, so time-lapse photography can uncover the minutiae of movement happening on a completely different timescale. Put the two together and you have a visual spectacular – a feast for the eyes.
The Canon EOS R5 makes it easier than ever to capture such high-resolution time-lapses, which can also be shot in 4K, with the movie being created in camera. The time between each frame can be specified, and it’s also possible to determine if exposure is locked at the start of the sequence or re-metered for every shot.
The Canon EOS R5 is designed to feel instinctive and natural when you’re filming, so you can concentrate on your subject and your creative vision. A Vari-angle screen pivots away from the camera body and rotates through 270˚, making it comfortable to shoot from different angles. Overexposure can be highlighted with striped ‘zebra’ markers that warn when areas that are too bright.
A clean HDMI output is available at 4K/60p, allowing the use of external recorders and enabling simultaneous internal/external recording.
